Blaul Lofts
A History
John Blaul and his sons played a critical role in the economic development of Burlington throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. They employed hundreds and served as prominent members of the community. Blaul Lofts was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
JOHN BLAUL ESTABLISHES A GROCERY STORE ON FRONT STREET
John Blaul starts a grocery store in 1856, expands to wholesale in 1874 and all four sons join the business. He passes away in 1885 and the sons take over the business.
JOHN BLAUL & SONS BEGINS DEVELOPMENT OF THE BLAUL BUILDING
As John Blaul & Sons expands, they construct the three-story Blaul building which houses offices and a factory on Valley & 5th Street.
BLAUL LOFTS CONSTRUCTION COMPLETES
John Blaul & Sons formally incorporates as John Blaul & Sons Company. The company deals in wholesale groceries, manufacturers, coffee roasters, spice grinders, and canning. The busy company adds a 4th story addition on the East side of the building.
JOHN BLAUL & SONS CONTINUES TO EXPAND
By 1915, the company employs 150 people and 18 traveling salesmen. All four brothers are directly involved in the business and serve prominent roles in the Burlington community. Another Blaul building is built in downtown Cedar Rapids.
BLAUL FAMILY SELLS THE BUSINESS AND RENTS THE BUILDING TO MONTGOMERY WARD
The remaining family members reach retirement age and sell the business to the Benner Tea Company. Montgomery Ward moves their auto service and farm departments into the Blaul building.
The first story of Blaul is constructed of stone and the upper stories built with brick. A corner turret with conical roof dominates the architecture of this Romanesque Revival building. The business was significant within the history of Burlington and products were shipped across the country.
